How do you prove to a customer that the work was actually done?

Short answer

Document the job while you are still on it: dated before-and-after photos, a plain-language summary of what you did and which parts you used, and the customer's confirmation that the work is complete. Send it the same day, before the invoice, so the proof reaches the customer before any question about the bill does.

What counts as proof

  • A photo of the problem before you touched it
  • A photo of the finished result from the same angle
  • Photos of receipts or part numbers for anything you installed
  • A short written summary: what was wrong, what you did, what you recommend next
  • The date, time, and job location
  • The customer's acknowledgment that the work was completed

When to send it

Send the proof the same day, ideally before you send the invoice. Customers rarely question a bill they can already see the work behind. If the proof arrives only after a dispute starts, it reads as a defense instead of a record.

Making it a habit

The reason most small shops do not do this is time, not willingness. The routine has to take about a minute after the job: take the photos as you work, say or type what you did, and share one link. WorkReceipt is built around exactly that routine, but a camera roll and a short text message also work if you are consistent.

Do photos hold up if a customer disputes the charge?

Clear, dated photos with a written summary and a customer sign-off are much stronger than memory alone. They do not guarantee an outcome, because card issuers and courts decide case by case, but they give you concrete evidence instead of your word against theirs.

How many photos do I need per job?

At minimum, one before and one after of the same area. For bigger jobs add photos of key steps, any damage found, and receipts. More photos help only if they are clear and labeled.
